In a segment on today’s Craig Fahle Show on WDET, Metromode Managing Editor Jeff Meyers talks with Startup experts Jon Zemke of Model D and SE Mich Startup and Charlie Wollborg of Curve Detroit and TedxDetroit fame about Detroit’s current economic climate and if startups are likely to survive it.
The three cover the gambit, asking questions like: Are we really developing a diverse entrepreneurial ecosystem that can compete on a global playing field? Is our region attracting the talent it needs? Which sectors are thriving and which are struggling?
Some great local resources are mentioned like Hatch, NewME Accelerator, and The Green Garage, including a growing list of Detroit-based startup incubators, accelerators, and I Am Young Detroit even gets a little shout-out.
Update 7/20/12: Charlie Wollborg has put together this great list of the resources mentioned in the podcast.
After declaring the region needs to create the next game-changer like Groupon or Instagram, both guests agree that the future is you, Young Detroit! They predict we’re going to see a lot of young people from outside fellowship programs like Teach For America, come in and take roots that will really impact Detroit a decade from now. “They’re starting younger and younger, and they’re starting here”.
