WANTED: RETAIL & POP-UP SHOPS IN THE VILLAGES

  • AUTHOR: // CATEGORY: Blog

Areas of Detroit that many people drive past and never think to look twice at will soon gain new life: The Villages, West Village Manor, the Parkstone Apartments, and Detroit Economic Growth Corporation (DEGC) are partnering together to put their unused spaces to good use in the form of both traditional and pop-up retail opportunities.

Midtown, Corktown, New Center, Cass Corridor, and the like have all become sought after hot spots, and now it appears The Villages will finally have their turn.

Tashmoo Biergarten is a great example of what the DEGC is hoping to accomplish in the West Village area. Located on Agnes St. between Van Dyke and Parker, the pop-up beer bar has had no problem drawing in crowds for the short amount of time it’s been around, and now the DECG is looking to add to this success by searching for entrepreneurs to open diverse retail nearby.

This is just the beginning as the DEGC’s larger goal is to use this retail project as a template that can be successfully implemented across Detroit’s neighborhoods. This means neighborhoods could see a big boost in their retail space, lending to a boost in population of the area…And this, my friends, is how we begin to transform our city to create more vibrant neighborhoods and spaces.

If you’re interested in the opportunity, download the official Villages Retail RFP and attend one of the DEGC’s upcoming meetings on August 29 and 30, 2012 at West Village Manor. The due date is September 10, 2012, so move quickly! All proposals should be delivered via email in PDF format to Business Development Manager Michael Forsyth mforsyth@degc.org no later than 10:00 AM on September 10, 2012 using the subject: ”West Village retail proposal ? Your Business Name. ”
