INVOLVE THE COMMUNITY

Kimo Fredericksen opened his business, True Body Fitness, in the hustling and bustling neighborhood of Corktown, Detroit. “It’s really rewarding. It’s very cool, and I’m lucky to be in a field where I get to help people, so it’s a positive environment, you know. I may be selling a service, but it’s something that I really believe in.”

One of the secret’s to his success is working with the community at large to promote healthy living in the city. Here, Kimo shares his top tips on how you can do the same.

Engaging Communities And Neighboring Businesses With Your Venture

    1. Offer your services at a discounted rate

It helps bring people in the door that would otherwise not be able to justify spending a certain amount on a service that they’re not sure if they like or not. Once they know they like it, they’ll be willing to pay full price, because they know they’re getting their money’s worth.

    2. Interact with people

Don’t just sit back and wait for people to come to you. In a city where the people are passionate about the places they frequent and support, you have to show them that you’re more than just a business. Don’t just stick flyers or ads out there. Go talk to people. In a culture where we’ve become so digital and socially relaxed, it means so much more when you can see a person’s authenticity in their eyes.

    3. Trade your services

Give influencers in the community free training in exchange for blogging and talking about their experience. They end up becoming more educated on your services, and end up spreading awareness and educating those around them. It’s a win-win situation for everyone involved!

    4. Create a Referral Program

This way your customers will receive perks for inviting their friends, family, and co-workers to your business. Everyone loves free stuff, so try to create some sort of reward program to encourage them.

    5. Have Open Houses

Anytime you expand, add something new, or just want and excuse to bring people in and have some fun, throw an open house. It brings people in the doors that may not normally check it out. Having some food and drinks for people to enjoy while they become acclimated with your space, and chat with perhaps some familiar and definitely some new faces, allows your business to transform into a Mother with open arms. Providing a comfortable and relaxed environment where people aren’t afraid to ask questions, enables membership growth and enhances the perception of your brand or service.

    6. Connect to local charities

Business-wise, you can write it off. Beyond that, you’re supporting something local. You’ll receive publicity through the charity, because they will recognize you for your efforts as well.
